Prepare For Bear Hunting Like You Do For Whitetails

Submitted By Carl Drake Feb .22.2016

Many of us sit in a depression due to the fact that turkey season is over. I reminisce on the highlights of my season this past year. Two birds taken in Florida with fellow pro staffer William Sullivan, two birds in the Bluegrass State of Kentucky and then finally tagging out in Indiana. Turkey season is over and what a great season it was!

I am glad to say that the depression was short-lived due to the fact I'm writing this blog to you from the remoteness in Alberta, Canada, near the Northwest Territories. I am spring bear hunting and what a rush it has been so far! The crazy thing is I am preparing myself every day as I would if I were whitetail hunting.

When I am talking about black bears it's not Yogi and Boo Boo. The bears here at Big Bear Outfitters are animals that are bigger than me. It amazes me the sense of smell these creatures have. That's where we go back to my point of preparing like I do for whitetails. I start my day by taking a shower using my Scent-A-Way green soap. One of the nice amenities here is I can wash my clothes in Scent-A-Way laundry detergent. To round out my daily routine I carry plenty of Scent-A-Way Max earth spray in my backpack and I make sure my clothes and hands are coated in it.

This simple routine can produce amazing results. We have had bears as close as 4 yards of us downwind and it's like they don't even know we're there! If you follow me on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/carl.drake.56?fref=ts) I'll definitely keep you updated on our progress here.

Life is like a roller coaster. We sometimes get down, but it's nothing that a little time in the woods can't fix! Stay safe and happy hunting to all!!
