Adam 'Big Nasty' Forsythe-Minnesota H.S. = Hunter Success
My friends know me as somewhat of a "gadget" kind of guy. I am a avid bow hunter who works road construction and have limited time to hunt. So yes, I am always looking for the latest "gadget" to improve my hunting success.
Last season was no exception. I decided to try a new scent killer. It was a new "advanced technology" spray that utilizes silver as part of it's cover agents. I had applied and passed the tests to get into the Duluth, MN city archery hunt last fall, so I was sure this new technology was going to put meat in the freezer. We could hang a 3 stands for this hunt, but my favorite setup was the stand I had located on a large ridge.
The first few times I hunted with this "new" silver spray I saw deer, but they all seemed to stop short when the came near my trail, and always had a sense of where I was. Needless to say that after a few sits, I was getting frustrated! So to boost my moral after a hunt one night I decided to put in copy of Hunter's Specialities PrimeTime Bucks videos. This video series is awesome for fair chase hunts and showing it like it is, plus great tip segments. As I watched this video I began to wonder " How do they do it? They have to get close enough to these deer with 2 guys."
As I watched the video I was trying to figure out what they did different than me. I already used the H.S. Laundry Detergent for my clothes and even the Earth Scent Dryer Sheets. Hunter's Specialties Scent-A-Way Liquid Soap for me. I store my clothes in the H.S. Deluxe Travel Bag and put my rubber boots in a separate travel bag. I go as far as using the Scent-A-Way Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant, and take it on step further using Scent-A-Way Powder in my boots. To top it off I wear 2 Earth Scent Prime Time Scent Wafers when in the woods."What was I missing?" Then it dawned on me. I go threw all the trouble to do things right but I wasn't using Scent-A-Way Scent Elimination Field Spray on my clothing!
So out the door I went. I headed to my local sporting goods store. I picked up a 24oz. bottle of Scent-A-Way scent killer. When I got home I re-washed everything to get rid of that "silver" smell from my clothes and boots. I pitched a half full bottle of the other stuff straight into the trash! My next hunt I was ready to put to the test all of my Hunter's Specialties products.
The time was about the 3rd week in Oct., pre-rut was kicking in! The morning was foggy and still, some of my favorite conditions to hunt. After spraying down my clothes, boots, and all my gear with Scent-A-Way and headed to my stand. I was in my stand about a hour before sunrise. As legal shooting time arrived the fog was still really thick, so seeing more than 20 yards was a challenge. Then suddenly I heard a branch snap! Then brush rustling. I could hear this deer was getting close to me, but I couldn't make it out. When I finally spotted this deer it was standing 20 yards from the base of my stand, crossing my entry trail. It turned out to be a mature, 7 point that had a old leg injury. The buck wasn't nervous at all! As the morning went on, the fog slightly lifted. I had that same buck in bow range 4 different times.
About 8:30 a.m. I had a doe come through that brought 4 other immature bucks with her. Ranging from spikes to 6 pointers and that 7 pointer to make 5 bucks. They were upwind, downwind, crossing my trail and not one of them ever got nervous, or sensed I was there.
After the doe parted the scene, the young bucks wandered around my stand, still they did not smell me. I was fast becoming a strong believer in the Scent-A-Way spray. Then the real fun of the morning began. Or should I say the fun I had with these young bucks! As these bucks drifted a bit out of sight, I reached for my True Talker also made by Hunter's Specialties. I started calling with soft doe estrous bleat. Within minutes I had 2 of the young bucks come flying back into my area. Then they drifted a bit again. This time I mixed it up a bit, still using the doe estrous bleat and some soft grunts. Once again 2 of the bucks came back around. The great thing about the True Talker is the range of sounds and pitches you can make, loud or soft, and better yet, it's all wrapped into one call!
This whole show lasted for at least 30 to 45 minutes and not one of those deer EVER got a whiff of human odor. What a hunt! I was sold that my new "gadget" was a not so new! It's a reliable product that I should have been using all along. From that morning forward I decided that when it comes to my scent control, I was not going to jump at the first new product to come along. I am going to stick with a name I know and trust, Hunter's Specialties, "For Sportsman, By Sportsman"! Be sure to check out all their different products and videos, I am sure you will be as happy with them as I am, and tell them Big-Nasty sent ya! ?
